BIS Laboratory Recognition Scheme (LRS)

Recognition of Testing Laboratories by Bureau of Indian Standards.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s National Standards Body, established under the BIS Act, 1986 and strengthened further under the BIS Act, 2016. BIS operates a comprehensive Product Certification System to safeguard consumer interests and ensure that products conform to applicable Indian Standards.

Testing plays a vital role in product certification. To support this, BIS operates a network of internal laboratories and also recognizes external laboratories through the Laboratory Recognition Scheme (LRS). This ensures the availability of competent, reliable, and standardized testing facilities across India and abroad.

Brief Overview of BIS Laboratory Recognition Scheme (LRS)

The scheme applies to:

  • Indian laboratories
  • LRS ensures that laboratories conducting testing for BIS certification purposes operate in compliance with internationally accepted laboratory standards and BIS regulatory requirements.

The legal framework governing LRS is provided under:

  • Section 13(4) and Section 32 of the BIS Act, 2016
  • BIS Rules, 2018
