It is widely associated with detergent, cleaning-product and industrial chemical manufacturing.

Because LAB is an important feedstock for downstream chemical processes, its purity and chemical characteristics must be carefully controlled. Parameters such as colour, moisture, specific gravity, Bromine Index, molecular weight, paraffin content, chain-length distribution, sulphonability and LAB content are important indicators of product quality.

In India, Linear Alkyl Benzene is covered by IS 12795:2020 – Linear Alkyl Benzene – Specification (First Revision). The product is covered under the BIS Scheme-I certification framework. The current BIS Product Manual is PM/12795/1, August 2024, incorporating Amendment No. 1. It specifies 1 litre as the sample quantity and states that grouping is not applicable.

Qualitance India provides end-to-end BIS Certification consultancy for Linear Alkyl Benzene manufacturers, including regulatory assessment, documentation, laboratory coordination, testing support, Quality Assurance Plan preparation, factory inspection preparation and BIS licence assistance.

What is Linear Alkyl Benzene?

Linear Alkyl Benzene is a petrochemical material containing predominantly linear alkylbenzene molecules. It is an important raw material for the manufacture of sulphonated surfactants.

LAB is commonly used in the production of:

Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonate

Detergent surfactants

Household cleaning products

Industrial cleaning products

Institutional cleaning formulations

Other downstream surfactant chemicals

Consistent LAB quality is important because changes in composition can affect downstream sulphonation, processing behaviour and product performance.

BIS Standard for Linear Alkyl Benzene

The applicable Indian Standard is:

IS 12795:2020 – Linear Alkyl Benzene – Specification (First Revision).

The current BIS Product Manual is:

PM/12795/1 – August 2024

The Product Manual records:

Standard: IS 12795:2020

Product: Linear Alkyl Benzene

Scheme: Scheme-I

Amendments: 01

Raw-material requirement: No specific requirement

Grouping guidelines: Not applicable

Sample quantity: 1 litre

2024 Amendment to IS 12795:2020

BIS issued Amendment No. 1 to IS 12795:2020 in 2024.

BIS’s implementation guideline states that the amended and unamended standards were allowed to run concurrently until 8 October 2024, and that the amendment was to be implemented by that date.

The amendment included changes such as:

Replacement of ISO 12937 by IS 1448 (Part 182) for moisture

Addition of ASTM D 1492 as an alternate method for Bromine Index

Addition of ASTM D 6045 as an alternate method for colour determination

Removal of the ASTM D-86 alternative for the relevant distillation test

Addition of an allowance for use of off-the-shelf highly pure hyamine

Addition of the use of C10-C14 standard LAB for peak identification in chain-length-distribution testing

The BIS implementation guideline also states that there was no change in the prescribed product requirement as a result of the amendment; the changes were primarily related to methods and testing provisions.

Is BIS Certification Mandatory for Linear Alkyl Benzene?

Yes. Linear Alkyl Benzene is included in the BIS compulsory certification framework against IS 12795:2020. BIS’s current Scheme-I page continues to list Linear Alkyl Benzene along with the applicable Quality Control Order history and the 2026 temporary-suspension notifications.

The original regulatory framework requires covered LAB to conform to the applicable Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under a BIS licence according to Scheme-I.

Current 2026 Regulatory Position

The LAB QCO has undergone a temporary suspension in 2026.

BIS’s current compulsory-certification listing records:

S.O. 1655(E), dated 30 March 2026 – Temporary Suspension of Linear Alkyl Benzene (Quality Control) Order, 2022

S.O. 3456(E), dated 25 June 2026 – subsequent temporary-suspension notification

At the same time, BIS’s current upcoming-QCO page lists:

Linear Alkyl Benzene — IS 12795:2020 — Enforcement date: 30 September 2026.

Therefore, manufacturers should treat September 2026 as an important compliance-preparation period and verify the exact regulatory position immediately before commercial supply because the QCO position is subject to government notifications.

Why Manufacturers Should Prepare in Advance

For a chemical product such as LAB, BIS certification requires more than submitting a laboratory sample. The manufacturer needs suitable analytical facilities, documented processes, trained personnel, calibration, batch traceability and regular testing.

Manufacturers should therefore prepare:

Product specifications

Laboratory procedures

Analytical equipment

Calibration records

Quality Assurance Plan

Control-unit records

Test records

Raw-material records

Production documentation

Container marking

BIS application documents

Early preparation can help avoid delays when the mandatory requirement becomes applicable.

Current BIS Product Manual for LAB

The current Product Manual contains the practical certification requirements for IS 12795:2020.

It specifies:

Sample Quantity: 1 litre

and:

Grouping Guidelines: Not applicable.

The Product Manual also states:

Raw Material: No specific requirement.

The licence scope is simply:

Linear Alkyl Benzene.

BIS Sample Quantity for Linear Alkyl Benzene

The current Product Manual specifies:

1 litre

as the sample quantity for laboratory testing during grant of licence, change in scope and applicable factory-surveillance activities.

Manufacturers should submit a representative sample that corresponds to the product being offered for certification.

Product Grouping for LAB

The current Product Manual clearly states:

Grouping Guidelines: Not applicable.

Unlike products where certification scope may be divided by size, grade or capacity, LAB certification is not structured through a conventional grouping table in this Product Manual.

The manufacturer’s focus should therefore be on consistent conformity of the product with all applicable requirements of IS 12795:2020.

Main Quality Requirements for Linear Alkyl Benzene

The current Product Manual identifies the following principal requirements:

Description

Colour

Specific gravity

Moisture

Doctor Test

Flash Point

Bromine Index

Ready Biodegradability of Sulphonate

Distillation

Molecular Weight

Paraffin content

Chain-length distribution

LAB content

Therefore, manufacturers should assess their GC capability before applying for certification.

Importance of Moisture Testing

Moisture is controlled in ppm and can affect the product’s processing and downstream performance.

The current Product Manual allows several methods, including IS 1448 (Part 182), which was incorporated into the amendment replacing ISO 12937.

BIS Testing Laboratory for Linear Alkyl Benzene

The BIS Laboratory Information Management System currently contains laboratory records for IS 12795:2020 – Linear Alkyl Benzene – Specification (First Revision). BIS Central Laboratory is among the listed laboratory records.

The current LIMS record also shows that laboratories may have specific exclusions from their displayed scope, including some major LAB analytical parameters.

Therefore, manufacturers should not select a laboratory based only on the standard number. The laboratory’s exact active testing scope should be checked against every parameter required for the proposed certification.

BIS Testing Cost for Linear Alkyl Benzene

Current BIS LIMS listings do not provide one universal consolidated testing charge covering every IS 12795 parameter.

The displayed laboratory records show exclusions for several specialized tests, including:

Molecular weight

Paraffin

Sulphonability

Chain-length distribution

Refractive index

Tetralins

LAB content

Ready biodegradability of sulphonate

Bromine Index

Doctor Test

Colour

Therefore, a manufacturer should obtain a laboratory quotation based on the exact test scope, rather than relying on a generic LAB testing price.

Total BIS Certification Cost for Linear Alkyl Benzene

The overall project cost can include:

BIS application-related charges

Certification-related fees

Laboratory testing

External laboratory testing

Sample preparation

Laboratory equipment

Calibration

Quality-system preparation

Factory inspection

Corrective action and re-testing

Consultancy charges

The final amount depends on the manufacturer’s testing capability and proposed certification arrangement.

Documents Required for BIS Certification

Typical documents may include:

Company registration documents

Factory address proof

Factory layout

Manufacturing process flow chart

Reaction-vessel details

Production capacity

Machinery list

Product specification

Raw-material information

Process-control details

Laboratory equipment list

Calibration certificates

Testing procedures

Test records

Quality Assurance Plan

Production records

Batch/control-unit records

Technical personnel details

GST/business documents

Trademark information

Authorization documents

Container/packing details

Proposed BIS marking

BIS declarations and undertakings

The final document set should be prepared according to the manufacturer’s actual factory and application scope.

Manufacturing Process of Linear Alkyl Benzene

A typical LAB manufacturing process can involve:

1. Raw Material Preparation

Suitable hydrocarbon feedstocks are received, tested and stored.

2. Feed Purification

Unwanted contaminants are reduced or controlled according to the production technology.

3. Alkylation

Benzene and linear olefin feed are reacted in a controlled process using an appropriate catalyst system.

4. Separation

The reaction mixture is separated into LAB, unreacted feed and other fractions.

5. Purification

The product is further purified to achieve the required quality.

6. Fractionation

Off-spec and unwanted components are separated.

7. Product Storage

Finished LAB is stored in suitable tanks with identification and traceability.

8. Laboratory Testing

Samples are tested against the applicable IS 12795 requirements.

9. Dispatch

Only conforming production covered by the applicable BIS requirements should be released for the relevant market.

Factory Inspection for LAB BIS
